Sun Bo Kong Vegetarian Restaurant

Sun Bo Kong Vegetarian Restaurant Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato DISCLAIMER: I grew up eating Chinese food and my mom's wonton soup, so Chinese food is comparatively mundane for me. If it's a delicious novelty for you, then you might want to rate this restaurant higher.

NOTE: This is a vegetarian Chinese restaurant that uses meat substitutes. Part of my positive tilt on how I rate them is in the quality of the fakeness of the meat.

B14 Assorted Vegetables and Wonton in Soup ($12.95)
  • Overall pretty ordinary tasting. In fact, I'm a bit inclined to give it bonus points for tasting just like my mom's home cooking.
  • Not exactly thick with wontons since this is mixed wontons and vegetables (and it says so right in the menu name), so if you're looking for tons of wontons and just token veggies, you might want to check with the server for something else to order.
  • The wontons are themselves quite interesting from a fake-meat point of view. They actually taste fairly close to pork. But more than that, they actually make an effort to have it look like pork-and-shrimp wontons: If you cut open one, you'll likely see a fat chunk of (fake) prawn. It doesn't taste like prawn (tastes more like bland nothing if you isolate it and taste it) but the appearance is comforting for omnivores that might be missing meat.

C27 Veggie Balls and Mushrooms with Black Pepper Sauce ($13.95)
  • Pretty simple and tasty. Sauce not too strong though, so if you're worried about that, or looking forward to a very strong pepperiness, check with your server.
  • Except for the shape, the "veggie balls" are pretty good at passing for tender chunks of (fake) chicken. And camouflaged amongst the comparably sized mushrooms, you might not even notice the odd shapes. If you're looking for fake chicken, this is probably better than the overtly fake-looking chicken options.
  • NOT swimming in oily sauce. This is good.

G10 Baked Fried Rice with Pumpkin and Cheese ($16.95)
  • Weird to see cheese and pumpkin in a Chinese restaurant, much less in the same dish. I recommend you try it! It's not only novel but the sauce makes it pretty tasty.
  • It's also a LOT of rice -- the server rated a single order as being enough rice for five persons! Certainly on it's own it's a meal for two.
  • It does NOT taste like Kraft cheddar mac 'n cheese. Nor does it taste like someone melted an awful lot of cheddar on top. In fact, it doesn't taste like cheese so much. The sauce (that doesn't harden up like cheese when it cools) kind of tasted to me like a sweet, not-spicy-hot, curry.
  • The pumpkin comes in small wedges with some of the green skin on, but baked enough to be tender and sweet. Make sure you scoop up some.

Service very friendly and helpful to non-Chinese speakers!
Not a lot of small tables for 2-4 so if you're a duo you might get stuck with a small table basically at the kitchen exit and the only other option is only a bit farther away.

Trafalgar's European Explorer 2006 memoirs part 3

A picture from my 2006 trip, a Trafalgar 's bus tour, on an itinerary called the European Explorer. I can't remember why I had this couple in the picture, but I do vaguely remember this to be in London, on the first official day of the tour group getting together. Their insistence on my helping them take a picture caused the three of us to be late getting back to the bus. The local tour guide had a "rule" about lateness, that we had to buy chocolate to share with everyone. As it turned out, later in the trip, on at least two occasions, we were stuck on the highway on either a long commute or a traffic jam, and I had chocolate and chocolate-covered marzipan to share. About the chocolate-covered marzipan -- Apparently we were in Austria just as they were celebrating Mozart's birthday with special marzipans wrapped in foil with the famous composer's picture. I'm pretty sure it was Mirabell Mozartkugeln . Anyway, there were enough to go around the en

Trafalgar's European Explorer 2006 memoirs part 10

The last of my pictures (at least the ones that survived the cheesy disposable cameras) from my 2006 trip, a Trafalgar 's bus tour, on an itinerary called the European Explorer. Below is the obligatory group photo. Not sure everyone's in it, actually. I'm pretty sure this one was taken by the tour director, Mike Scrimshire as I'm in the back row, on the right side.

Trafalgar's European Explorer 2006 memoirs part 9

More assorted couples on my 2006 trip, a Trafalgar 's bus tour, on an itinerary called the European Explorer. An American couple who joked about being from "the land of the giants" -- and with good reason, because both of them were really tall! A cute Jewish mother-daughter pair who ducked out part-way to divert to Israel. I vaguely remember the issue of the daughter being an orthodox Jew was highlighted in France when, to make things easy, she just declared herself vegetarian for the wait staff. I also remember there was some logistics error in France because our party size was way underestimated or simply relayed incorrectly, and there was a shortage of food at dinner. Dessert came as an unopened can of yogurt. It did not seem like they tried to make it up to us later, either. Plus there was smoking every which way in France, and I had a helluva time with that. We were also in a hotel that seemed tucked away in the burbs, and not walking distance from anythin
