Jane's at the Heights is in a neighbourhood I very rarely go to. Wouldn't have gone today except Zomato sent me a voucher for one free main, so when I was catching up with a friend I suggested we try it. It's a smallish diner with a very interesting and rather extensive east-and-west something-for-everyone menu. TIP: The lunch menu is not the same as the dinner menu! Some items like laksa are composed differently when you get it at lunch and when you get it at dinner (according to the menu, if you look at it carefully). The new owners are Thai, so there's a goodly amount of Thai items. DISCLAIMER: As mentioned, I went to Jane's at the Heights with Zomato voucher. I didn't tell them at first , only after we ate and went to the counter to pay. Only one item (my friend's burger) was removed from the bill. Everything else we paid for. After Dine Out Vancouver 2016 at The American Cheesesteak Company , I had to come back to use my vouchers. Somehow I ended up with three, so happily I managed to get a couple of friends to come with me before they expired at the end of this month. This time around, I decided to try their most basic and traditional Cheesesteak, and chose the Philly ($10, cheese + sauteed onions) with American Cheese. I wanted to know what the fuss was about that started this. Huge mistake. It was horribly boring. Also, "American Cheese" is white like mozza but kinda tastes like Kraft cheese singles. Ick. Sauce -- any kind of sauce -- would make it infinitely better, and I looked wistfully at my friends enjoying theirs that cost them just a couple of dollars more. They had the Koagie ($13) and Cowboy ($12 and their most popular one). Even without our $5 vouchers, price for portion is excellent. You're getting maybe more meat than two McDonalds burgers that weigh in at around ...

Overall I feel The American Cheesesteak Company is offering a very good deal during Dine Out Vancouver 2016. Since you get a voucher for $5 off, the net cost is only $15. Even at $20, what you get is a sizable and tasty meal, complete with drink. Even without Dine Out Vancouver, their sandwiches/subs are already about twice the size of a gourmet burger at a comparable price. The DOV menu is NOT for takeout, but if you're worried about finishing your sandwich, you may want to work on your side, and then wrap up your sandwich to go. You can get a steak knife from the condiments counter to cut a portion of your sandwich for eating there. This is actually inside The American Cheesesteak Company, and the person who answers the phone will say so. Also, close to closing time when it's really quiet (even around half an hour or possibly more before closing), they may put the chairs up to clean the floors. THEY ARE STILL OPEN! Try the door and see. The frozen custard here is like soft serve ice cream, except it is firmer and a bit more elastic feeling. Slight custard flavour plus whatever flavour you chose. Apple Pie Like apple pie filling, not the apple pie crust part. Even has soft bits of apple in it. Rather good but would be even better if flavour were stronger. Salted Caramel More salty than caramel-y. Maybe too much on the salty side. If you just want one flavour, under no circumstances should you buy scoops or cones. Get a whole pint for the same price as a couple of scoops. Grab one of the plastic sample spoons. Then go to the nearby Emery Barnes Park and enjoy.
