Out of the blue, a pretty girl on Yelp chats me up. It starts out innocently: She's a foodie, she likes my different approach to restaurant reviews. At the time, her name was Femke from Toronto, on Yelp. She's pretty insistent on chatting but I'm not on Yelp much these days, so I suggest either Messenger or WhatsApp. She chooses WhatsApp.
But the person who contacts me on WhatsApp is "Sunny" phone number +1 (604) 598-9659 from New York (later when I checked Yelp again, her name had changed from "Femke" to "Sunny"). She explains that she's based in New York but sometimes comes to Canada on business trips. Turns out she's a wealthy business owner born into a wealthy family. Divorced, looking for a new soulmate. Makes gobs of money day trading futures, which she learned from her Wall Street father who has a team of analysts.
More and more, day trading and the wealth generated enters the conversation. It allows her financial freedom, world travel, and philanthropy. She sends me pictures of a Nigerian school. She says "I often donate to help those children in the poor areas of Nigeria, West Africa, and today they sent me some photos". Would I like to learn day trading from her?
So far this person is starting to look really attractive. She's pretty, ten years younger, divorced and looking to be remarried, wealthy, generous. My own interests include investments and I have a history of charity and volunteering. Is she an AI chatbot with keywords targeted to my profile?
Maybe it's looking a gift horse in the mouth but I'm feeling cautious. Shouldn't we at least meet first before I trust my money to her? She suggests I open an account in the Crypto.com app. (And curiously, there are two apps in the Google App store called Crypto.com, both with different publishers).
When she comes on strong I start digging. Thanks to Google Image Search:
- Her pictures of a Nigerian school were posted on reddit several months ago.
- Her dinner of steamed crabs is from @zhuxioru21 on Twitter and that soup in the background looks nothing like egg drop soup, which she claimed it was.
- The pictures of herself were from various social media accounts including AmandaJenJen on Instagram and @Deshi_Chorri on Twitter.

I should mention that she contacted me shortly after another suspicious out-of-the-blue chat from LinkedIn, which made me extra-cautious.
