Yesterday I reviewed Sprague Cannery's Minestrone Soup. If you haven't heard of Sprague Cannery, they are a Canadian company making soups in Canada and extremely worried by Trump's tariffs:
If you're trying to buy Canadian during these uncertain times, you can use the
store locater to find Sprague's products. You'll want to look carefully at which stores are listed because only some stores of a chain will have them (e.g., not every Save-on-Foods, just some of them).
Sprague Cannery's soups are also a "premium product", loaded with limitations such as Plant Based, No Preservatives, Gluten Free, and
BPA-Free Cans. The ring-pull style cans are also really easy and handy to open, no can-opener required.
I tried the
Organic Coconut Curry today and I feel it's a "curry" for people who can't handle a "real curry" with actual chili heat. There's clear "Indian curry" style flavor and a slight sweetness but despite "coconut" and "sweet potato" on the can, neither coconut or sweet potato came through very strongly. This definitely tries to be like a "weak curry".
If you are actually a curry fan and can handle spicy heat, this will probably be a disappointment. But if you're curious about curry and can't handle spicy heat, this is a great substitute that'll get you very close to what a curry tastes like.
Straight out of the can it's quite thick and the instruction says not to add water, but I still added a little to get what's left inside the can. Once heated up, it becomes more watery so don't be fooled by the initial thickness.
Instead of just drinking it down straight as a soup, I poured some over macaroni as a sauce/soup to make a meal. Will try it with white rice later tonight.
As meals go, their Minestrone Soup works better if you have nothing to pair it with. This curry I feel is better as an accompaniment or ingredient, like a handy soup base.
